Why your business doesn't show up on Google (a diagnostic, not a mystery)

The five reasons local businesses stay invisible in search — and how to tell which one is yours, with checks you can run yourself in fifteen minutes.

“We don’t show up on Google” feels like weather — arbitrary and unfixable. It isn’t. In local search, invisibility almost always traces to one of five causes, and you can identify yours in about fifteen minutes without paying anyone.

1. Google doesn’t know you exist as a place

Local results are built on Google Business Profile, not your website. If you’ve never claimed your profile — or claimed it and left it a husk — you’re absent from the map results that dominate local queries.

Check: Search your business name plus your city. If the panel on the right (or the map card on mobile) is missing, sparse, or shows “Own this business?”, this is your first problem, and it’s free to fix.

2. Your site can’t be read

Some sites are invisible because their pages give search engines nothing to work with: a homepage that’s one big image, services buried in PDFs, text rendered only by scripts that crawlers time out on, or menus that hide every internal link.

Check: Open your site, press Ctrl+U (View Source), and search for the name of your main service. If it’s not there in plain text, machines aren’t reading it either.

3. You have no page for the thing you want to rank for

Search engines rank pages, not businesses. If you’re a plumber who wants “water heater replacement” customers but your only pages are Home, About, and Contact, there is literally nothing to rank. This is the single most common cause we see.

Check: For each service you want to be found for, ask: does a page on my site exist whose entire job is that service? If not, no amount of “SEO” sprinkled elsewhere substitutes.

4. You’re outmatched, not invisible

Sometimes you are indexed and structured — you’re just outranked. The businesses above you have faster sites, deeper pages, more reviews, and more of the wider web referring to them. This isn’t a penalty; it’s a scoreboard.

Check: Search your target query and actually read the top three local results. Compare their page for that service against yours — length, specificity, photos, reviews. Honest comparison usually explains the ranking instantly.

5. You’re inconsistent across the web

If your name, phone number, or address differ between your site, your Google profile, Yelp, and old directories — machines lose confidence in who you are, and confidence is exactly what local rankings are made of.

Check: Search your business name plus your phone number in quotes. Then your old number, if you’ve changed it. Inconsistencies surface fast.

The order matters

Fix these in the order listed. A perfect website can’t overcome an unclaimed Business Profile; a claimed profile can’t rescue a site with no service pages. Visibility is a stack, and it’s built from the bottom.

If you’d rather have the whole stack surveyed at once, that’s what our visibility audit is — the same checks, run properly, with the findings in plain English.
