Charting a home-services contractor

LABELED DEMONSTRATION — NOT A CLIENT ENGAGEMENT

Problem

A contractor whose entire pipeline is word-of-mouth, invisible for every service they offer, while lead-gen middlemen rank first and sell their own inquiries back to them as "leads."

Intervention

A service-page architecture matching real search language, proof-of-work galleries, service-area structure without thin city pages, and conversion paths built for phones.

Evidence used

Query mapping across service and area terms; competitor structural analysis; Core Web Vitals; call and form-event tracking from launch.

End state

The demonstration shows the end-state — one substantive page per real service, honest area coverage, and measurable inquiry paths. As a labeled demonstration, it reports no client metrics.

This is a demonstration study. It applies our method to a representative scenario — it is not a client engagement, and it claims no client results.

The situation

A pattern we see constantly in the trades: fifteen years of excellent work, a pipeline that runs entirely on referral, and a single-page website from 2016. Meanwhile, the first page of results for every service they offer is occupied by national lead-generation sites — middlemen who rank for “drain repair San Clemente,” collect the homeowner’s inquiry, and sell it to three contractors at once. The contractor is paying for access to customers who were searching for exactly what they do.

The survey

  1. Map the real service language. Homeowners don’t search for trade jargon — they search for symptoms and outcomes. The query map pairs each genuine service with the language people actually use for it.
  2. Read the middlemen’s structure. Lead-gen sites win with structure, not substance: a page per service per area, fast templates, aggressive schema. Their weakness is that they’re nobody — no local proof, no faces, no work photos.
  3. Inventory honest proof. Years in service, licenses held, photos of completed work, genuinely served areas. Local proof is the one asset the middlemen cannot fake.

The build

  • One page per real service. Each answers the symptom, shows the work, states the process, and ends in a tap-to-call. No page exists without a genuine service behind it.
  • Area coverage without the sprawl. A service-area structure that honestly states coverage — not thirty duplicated city pages, which modern search treats as the spam it is.
  • Proof over polish. Completed-work galleries with descriptive alt text, license numbers, plain-language guarantees. Credibility a lead-gen template can’t reproduce.
  • Phone-first conversion. In the trades, the conversion is a call. Tap-to-call in the sticky header, forms as backup, both measured.

What this demonstrates

Against structural middlemen, a local business wins by being both structured and real. The method: match their architecture, beat them with proof they can’t fake, and keep every inquiry direct — none of it resold.
